CHILDREN, senior citizens and needy folk in Seri Kembangan and Petaling Jaya enjoyed extra festive cheer, thanks to two city councils in Selangor.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) held a festive gathering in Seri Kembangan while Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) held its event in Section 52, Petaling Jaya.
Supporting the needy as part of its corporate social responsibility, MBSJ presented cheques of RM3,000 each to four non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
These NGOs were BRDB Rotary Children’s Residence, Seri Kembangan Old Folk’s Home, Persatuan Perlindungan Kanak-Kanak Suriaku Selangor and Jing Sun Welfare Care Centre.
The city council also distributed ang pow to senior citizens and B40 folk.
Present at MBSJ’s celebration were Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim, several councillors, Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi@Azmi, Subang MP Wong Chen and Serdang district deputy police chief Supt Shahnaz Akhtar Haji.
“To enliven the celebration, a total of 1,500 food vouchers worth RM10 each were distributed to earlybird visitors for them to enjoy meals at the food truck and stalls on site,” MBSJ’s Corporate and Strategic Management Department said in a media statement.
“The event featured traditional and modern stage dances, a Chinese orchestra recital and a lion dance.
“There was also a lucky draw offering prizes to visitors.
“MBSJ remains committed to assisting the community while strengthening ties through cultural diversity, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, a highlight at MBPJ’s event was Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon putting the finishing touches to a Chinese calligraphy piece that featured an image of a snake, in celebration of 2025 being the Year of the Wood Snake.
Also present at the event were Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim and MBPJ councillors.
The celebration included a lion dance, traditional Chinese music ensemble performance and a harmonica recital.
A lucky draw and ang pow distribution to children and senior citizens added to the festive vibe.
Visitors enjoyed food such as chicken rice, char kuey teow, apam balik and Nyonya kuih.
“Petaling Jaya is not only growing as an economic hub and centre of progress; it is also a destination for arts, heritage and culture,” the local council’s corporate communications unit said in a media statement.
“It also has the potential to become a tourist hub.
“In conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2025, MBPJ is playing its part in enriching the state’s tourism experience by showcasing unique local cultures as a major tourism asset.
“Festive celebrations such as this reflect the diversity of Malaysia’s cultural heritage,” the city council added.
