THE popular Chap Goh Meh celebration at Taman Jaya lake in Petaling Jaya is making a return after a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic and park renovations.
This year’s celebration is a joint effort by a team of six Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillors who are aiming to bring back the pre-pandemic festive excitement with an engaging line-up of activities such as a high-stilt lion dance performance and a traditional Chinese fan dance.
The celebration will take place today from 7pm onwards.
“There will be over 20 food stalls, featuring hawkers from the SS2 night market,” said MBPJ councillor Loh Y Lun.
“The renowned Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance troupe, multiple national and world champions, will be performing.
“There will also be a Chinese fan dance by community exercise groups from our respective areas,” he said, adding everyone is invited to join in the celebration.
Taman Jaya has long been recognised as one of the top locations for Chap Goh Meh, which is touted as the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day.
Free mandarin oranges will be provided for single participants to toss into the lake, as part of the tradition to find a mate. ― By LEONG SHU YIN
