MELAKA: Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong captured a captivating image of a flock of Great Egrets in a padi field in Pulau Gadong, sparking nostalgic memories of his youth and the festive village atmosphere where locals gathered to watch the elegant birds.
"Great Egrets would catch fish or snails in the paddy fields," Lim reminisced, highlighting the unique charm these birds brought to rural landscapes.
The Great Egret, a large heron species with all-white plumage, is renowned for its striking appearance.
Standing up to one-metre tall and with a length of 80cm to 104cm, it has a wingspan of up to 170cm.
These majestic birds can also be seen along the coastlines of Klebang.
Lim, who is also the Melaka MCA chairman, expressed his longing for the sense of unity and community that once thrived in the state.
"We only looked at everyone as our brethren during that period. I miss that era," he shared during an interview on Sunday (Feb 9).
The MCA vice-president spotted the flock while visiting Pulau Gadong to explore the rich history of the Peranakan Chinese community in the area.
During his visit, he also launched the 10th anniversary of Kiat Swan Garden Villa, a site with historical significance dating back to the late 1800s.
Lim emphasised the importance of preserving the Peranakan Chinese heritage, which continues to enrich Melaka's cultural landscape.
"The sighting of the Great Egrets serves as a reminder of the beauty of nature and the significance of harmonious living among various communities in Melaka's history," he added.
