THE first edition of Subang Jaya Car-Free Day this year will kick off on Feb 8 at a new location – Taman Tasik Sri Serdang, a lakeside park in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

The programme is one of the efforts by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) towards realising its vision for a low-carbon city.

The car-free day is also in line with MBSJ’s efforts to create an inclusive city by encouraging people from all walks of life to adopt a healthy lifestyle and participate in community activities.

Subang Jaya Car-Free Day, first introduced in 2022, was initially held every month, usually on Sunday mornings at Jalan Kemajuan Subang in SS16, Subang Jaya.

The programme was subsequently changed to four times a year in 2024, and again this year.

Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said the dates and locations for this year’s car-free days had been identified.

Car-free days are on Feb 8 at Taman Tasik Sri Serdang, May 11 at South City Plaza, Seri Kembangan, Aug 10 at Giant Bandar Kinrara, Puchong and MBSJ’s headquarters in USJ5, Subang Jaya on Oct 26.

“The first Subang Jaya car-free day this year will include an opening ceremony of the Taman Tasik Sri Serdang food court after the facility was upgraded,” he said.

Taman Sri Serdang was chosen because it has a moderate yet multiracial population, has good road infrastructure and offers a conducive environment for car-free day activities.

Some of the activities lined up include a fun run and fun ride, demonstrations featuring detector dogs, firefighting, RC boat and RC helicopter, community sports, eco-free market and free health screening.

MBSJ and several government agencies will also set up booths for council-related payments, e-waste collection, dengue awareness and crime prevention exhibitions.

Meanwhile, after chairing January’s full board meeting at the MBSJ’s headquarters, Amirul Azizan said the city council would host its Chinese New Year celebrations on the evening of Feb 15 at Jalan SK6/1, Seri Kembangan.

“MBSJ will present donations and ang pow to senior citizens and B40 recipients at this event.

“We will also distribute free food coupons worth RM10 each to early bird visitors to enjoy food and drinks from food trucks,” he said, adding that there would also be lucky draw prizes.

Various cultural performances and a lion dance show have been lined up.
