Guests at the launch of Tuah 1895, a dining and lifestyle hub in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, came dressed in batik and denim.

Bukit Bintang City Centre chief executive officer Sri Ram Sivasambu said batik is regarded as a cultural heritage while denim is seen as hip, happening and casual.

“Just like the timeless batik and denim, Tuah 1895 stands as a testament where passion meets innovation and to what’s possible,” he said.

The plaza’s namesake, which means “luck” in Malay and “prosperity” in Chinese when referring to the word huat, comes from its address in Jalan Hang Tuah.

Formerly the site of Bukit Bintang City Centre sales gallery, the 45,000sq ft two-level plaza adjacent to LaLaport mall also has a historical element to it.

It was where Pudu Jail, which was built in 1895, once stood.

In remembrance of the prison complex, the archway of the prison gate has been preserved.

At the opening ceremony, guests were entertained with a lion dance and muhibbah cultural performance.

The lighting up of the Tuah 1895 logo and raining confetti marked its launch.

Game booths, where participants stood to win an array of prizes, were also placed at the mezzanine floor.

The game that drew the most laughs from participants was the wind booth, where attempts were made to catch flying bits of coloured paper to be exchanged for cash vouchers.

Also present were UDA Holdings Bhd chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, EcoWorld executive chairman Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) chief operating officer Sazaliza Zainuddin.

Also in attendance were representatives of all eight tenants of the complex.

They are Ministry of Crab, As I Am, Ting Shan, Chef Kecik, Pak Tok, Hock Kee Kopitiam, Crafty’s Bar and Lounge as well as Morph by Kamileon.

“Tuah 1895 is more than just a place to dine. It is a space where people come together to enjoy exceptional food, connect with one another and experience the vibrant energy of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia,” said Sri Ram.

“This opening is a significant milestone as Bukit Bintang City Centre continues to redefine urban living and lifestyle.”

The plaza, which is part of a four-phase development project spanning 7.85ha of integrated, mixed-use, transit-oriented development is a joint venture between UDA, Eco World Development Group Bhd and EPF.
