Two brothers from Kampung Sri Jaya in Skudai, Johor, whose family home was damaged in a fire, received assistance to allow them to face their school examinations with peace of mind.

Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) candidate Mohamad Akmal Muqri Mohamad Farok, 20, and Mohamad Lutfi, 18, taking his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, lost everything including school books, uniforms and laptops in the fire.

Learning of their plight, Econsave Cash and Carry Sdn Bhd came forward to help the siblings and their family get back on their feet.

Mohamad Lutfi, a student at SMK Bandar Uda Utama, said the aid was a morale booster.

“It eased my family’s sadness as we lost everything in the fire.

“The incident was a major setback for me and my brother as both of us had been preparing to sit for the exams,” he said when met at Econsave Taman Teratai outlet.

Mohamad Akmal Muqri shared that the brothers wanted to put the fire behind them and instead use it as a catalyst to do well in their school examinations.

“Our preparations might have been affected but we are grateful for the help, as we could buy new uniforms and other school supplies, and focus on the exams.

“Hopefully, we’ve done well and will make our parents proud,” he said.

Meanwhile, Econsave Taman Teratai branch manager Azian Mohd Yusof said the family was given RM1,500 to buy essential items including school supplies.

She said this was part of the hypermarket’s corporate social responsibility in helping community members in need.

She hoped that the aid would help the family rebuild their lives.

The fire, which happened at around 9.40pm on Jan 3, damaged up to 60% of the family home.
