Stretching limits to set yoga records

AN IMPRESSIVE display of flexibility saw over 700 yoga competitors flex their way into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) in Negri Sembilan.

The Malaysian International Yoga Competition 2024 was organised by Sakthi School of Yoga Malaysia together with yoga schools around the country.

The one-day event at Dewan The Grand, Lukut was attended by 741 participants.

Sakthi School of Yoga received the MBR recognition for the “Most Participants in a Yoga Competition”.

“The event transcended the mere demonstration of physical postures, as it also encompassed the mental and emotional dimensions of yoga,” the school said in a media statement.

“A team of 150 committee members comprising teachers and students worked together as a cohesive unit to ensure the event’s success.”

Competitors showcased three distinct postures, each performed within a two-minute timeframe.

The competition had various categories including children, adults and seniors with participants from the age of four to over 50 years old.

A panel of judges evaluated the participants based on their technique, alignment and overall performance.

The programme kicked off with two performances that added to the cultural richness of the event.

The urumi melam traditional drum show created an electrifying atmosphere, followed by a silambam martial arts display.

“Yoga competitions serve as a celebration of strength, flexibility and personal growth.

“They also foster a sense of community and camaraderie among practitioners,” the school said.

“Many view these competitions as a positive and inspiring platform to share the benefits of yoga with others.

“It also offers an engaging and motivating opportunity to enhance one’s practice and connect with fellow enthusiasts over a shared passion for yoga.”

The event saw more than 2,000 attendees, including parents and supporters, coming together to celebrate the occasion and cheer on the participants.
