Sibu road upgrades set for Dec 5 completion

Upgrades on busy Jalan Oya thoroughfare in Sibu, Sarawak, will be completed by Dec 5.

Two secondary schools, a primary school and a shopping centre are located along the road.

“The first phase of upgrading work covers 1.44km, and only 1.58% is left to be completed.

“The project is on track for completion by Dec 5,” said Sarawak Deputy Infrastructure and Ports Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.

Speaking to reporters during a site visit, Aidel said the tender for the next phase to add another 1km to the road would be opened soon under Public Works Department’s (JKR) supervision.

“For phase two, we will also be installing three smart traffic lights to improve traffic flow.”

Meanwhile, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said he was optimistic that the new dual carriageway would help ease congestion in the area.

“One of the pressing issues is the need for traffic lights to avoid confusion when the road opens.

“We have coordinated with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) but in the meantime, we hope traffic controllers can be deployed.”

Chieng revealed that the first phase of the project cost RM22.8mil.
