Two-day football tournament in Penang to feature eight teams

EIGHT teams will battle for Moey Yoke Ham Cup 2024 to be held at the football field of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Gelugor and Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) in Jalan Padang Victoria, Penang.

Organised for the third year by CRC Penang, the two-day tournament on Sept 15 and 16 will feature Selangor, Perak, Melaka (two teams), Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kedah and Johor.

The public is welcome to attend the tournament starting from 8.30am on the first day at USM and from 2pm at CRC Penang the following day.

The event was established to honour the late Penang football team head coach Moey Yoke Ham for his significant contributions and unwavering dedication to the local football community.

During the 1970s, he dedicated countless hours to the football field, organising training programmes for CRC Youth teams.

His efforts were rewarded when the CRC Football team moved from the 3rd Division to the prestigious Penang 1st Division Football Association of Penang (FAP) league.

His influence extended beyond CRC Penang as Moey served as the coaching director of the FAP from 1993 to 1996 and later as head coach of the Penang football team from 1996 to 1999.

His proudest achievement was in 1998 when he led Penang to the Premier League title.

Additionally, the team finished as runners-up in the FA Cup in 1997 and 1999.

In 2000, Moey expanded his coaching career to Singapore, where he managed Gombak United FC, and later Tanjong Pagar United in 2002.

Moey died in December 2020, leaving behind a legacy in the football world.

The tournament stands as a fitting tribute to his enduring impact on the sport.
