Blacklist for Sibu contractors who back out after getting tenders

CONTRACTORS who back out of projects that have been awarded to them will be blacklisted.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said students at SMK Bukit Assek in Sibu were inconvenienced when a company refused to carry out a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project because of a dispute over the cost.

Chieng said the company had taken part in the tender and was awarded the contract by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to build a fence for the school’s multipurpose court.

“But after being awarded the contract, the company rejected it and refused to proceed,” he told reporters after handing out incentives to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top performers at SMK Bukit Assek.

He said companies bidding for the project had been informed about the cost and scope of work by the implementing agency.

“This clearly shows the company was irresponsible,” he said.

Chieng said he had written to the office of the Sibu Resident and recommended for the company to be blacklisted.

“I want this contractor to be blacklisted for any government related projects in Bukit Assek.

“This will serve as a lesson for all contractors that there will be no compromise for those refusing to proceed with contracts awarded to them,” he said.

All other RTP projects in the constituency were proceeding well, he added.

During the event, Chieng handed out educational incentives to 13 students who obtained excellent results in the SPM. — By ANDY CHUA
