A MULTISENSORY room has been set up at SK Hutan Melintang in Bagan Datuk, Perak, for children with special needs.

Teluk Intan Rotary Club president Tan Aik Kian said this was made possible via a global grant from Rotary Foundation.

“Together with six other Malaysia-based clubs in District 3300 and Jurong Town Rotary Club from District 3310 Singapore, we applied for the grant last year,” he said.

“We managed to get US$47,875 or about RM224,000, which was approved in November 2023,” he said during the unveiling of the room.

“The first condition to apply for this grant is that each club must donate US$1,500 (RM7,037) to the foundation every year to receive financial assistance.”

Tan highlighted that about 30 children would benefit from the room.

He said some special needs children in Hutan Melintang were affected by the 2021 closure of Bethany Home – a training centre for people with disabilities.

“After a discussion with our members, we decided to provide the multisensory room for underprivileged children.

“This will ensure children with special needs in the community receive a good education,” he said, adding that the initiative was in line with one of Rotary International’s seven focus areas, namely basic education and literacy.

Tan also thanked the school headmaster and teachers who actively participated in and supported the project.

“Their efforts and dedication are important to ensure smooth development for the project.”

He said that another multisensory room had been planned at a school in Teluk Intan.

“Such rooms have a positive impact for children, especially those with autism,” he said.
