Retention ponds to deal with Kg Melayu Subang floods

THE proposed construction of three retention ponds to mitigate floods in Kampung Melayu Subang, Shah Alam in Selangor will be discussed by the Petaling District’s action committee.

Shah Alam mayor Cheremi Tarman said there were ongoing discussions to identify locations for the retention ponds.

“If possible, we aim to avoid land acquisition and will identify suitable areas before proceeding, although details have not been discussed yet,” he said.

He added that MBSA would collaborate with Petaling District and Land Office to study the extent of the land required.

“For flood mitigation at the location, we will coordinate with Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) as the issue involves river overflow.

“We believe internal drains need assessment as there seems to be a lack of connection between them.

“I understand that there are proposed upgrades by DID, but it is yet to be executed,” he told StarMetro during Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) Jamuan Aidilfitri 2024 in Shah Alam.

Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim said the plan for retention ponds followed flash floods on April 17 that lasted three hours.

The flood was due to overflow from Sungai Damansara, he said.

Kampung Melayu Subang was an unplanned township, he said, adding that lack of drains was also another reason for floods.

Muhammad Izuan said among the long-term flood mitigation plans was to ensure existing drains were cleared.

“Approximately 500 houses were affected by the flash flood.

“Construction of the retention ponds may affect around 20 houses during the process, but ultimately could mitigate flash floods for over 400 houses in the area,” he added.
