SEVERAL issues such as traffic congestion and overcrowding at Seberang Jaya Hospital in Penang will be resolved once the RM500mil upgrading project is completed by the end of this year.

Public Works Department (JKR) technician Ilyas Che Wi said the project would reduce overcrowding at the hospital.

“The project involves the construction of a new multi-storey building with modern facilities,” he said.

“Some of the hospital services will be relocated there. This will reduce long queues at the hospital.”

Software engineer Nur Muhammad Aliff Shariff, 31, said he expected better and more adequate parking once the project was completed.

“This will make it easier for people coming to the hospital for treatment.

“Previously, we had to park outside and walk a considerable distance to reach the hospital,” he said.

It was earlier reported that the upgrading project, which began in 2016, was to enhance bed facilities, the intensive care unit, and parking.

Last Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM1mil allocation for the purchase of ventilator machines, water tanks, ultrasound equipment and the setting up of a lactation room at the hospital.

Penang health committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the project would be completed on schedule.

“It is important to address the congestion problem at the Seberang Jaya Hospital that has been going on for quite some time.

“The Penang government is committed to delivering better healthcare services to the public,” Gooi was quoted by state publisher Buletin Mutiara, as saying.
