INSTEAD of swiping through dating apps, hopeful romantics can try tossing mandarin oranges into water like a lake, river or sea.

This iconic Chap Goh Meh ritual calls for singles to inscribe their names and contact numbers on the oranges.

It is believed that those who find each other’s oranges may be destined for love.

Bandar Mahkota Cheras (BMC) Residents’ Association is holding an orange-tossing event at BMC Recreational Park today with the aim to keep this tradition alive.

BMC Residents’ Association adviser Heng Wah Mai said, “It is free and we welcome participants of all ages.

“They can toss and fish for mandarin oranges at the lake.

“Baby pools will be set up for children to experience the fun too as we want to expose them to the tradition at an early age.”

This year, to attract more youths, the association has arranged for wushu, diablo and guzheng street performances.

Also holding a Chap Goh Meh orange-tossing event is Happy Relationship Sdn Bhd, a matchmaking company in Ampang.

Chief executive adviser Alan Thong Boon Liang said, “We wish to help bachelors and bachelorettes find their soulmates on Chinese Valentine’s Day.”
