15 young Malaysians do country proud in Maths Olympics


The Malaysian team at WIMO Final 2023 with a 14-medal and Merit Award haul.

The Malaysian contingent comprising 15 members did the country proud at World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) Final 2023 held in Kuala Lumpur.

The young team picked up six gold, five silver and three bronze medals as well as a Merit Award.

The gold medallists were Tan Ze Ern from SJK (C) Kheng Tean, Penang; Isaac Lim Zhi Yann from Tenby Schools Ipoh, Perak; Teoh Zhou Zhe from SMK Taman Ria Jaya, Kedah; Joash Lim Hen Yi from SMK Bandar Sibu, Sarawak; as well as Wong Wen Yin and Chloe Loh Wen Jia from International School Parkcity in Kuala Lumpur.

Silver went to Ng Hai Thong from SJK (C) Perempuan Klang, Selangor; Samuel Goh Yu Siang from SJK (C) Kwang Hua Sungai Nibong, Penang; Liew Sing Hao from SJK (C) Chan Wa, Negri Sembilan; Tang Yi Xuan from SJK (C) Serdang Baru 2, Selangor; and Tan Jun Yan from Stonyhurst International School Penang.

The three bronze medallists were Tharun Adithya Diwakaran from SJK (T) Castlefield in Puchong, Selangor; as well as Wong Wen Ting and Lim Yun Zhe from Kuen Cheng High School, Kuala Lumpur.

Marcus Cheah Kar Kit from Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur International went home with the Merit Award.

Team leader Jacqie Lum said the final drew 380 participants from nine countries – Malaysia, Bulgaria, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

WIMO Final was organised by Olympiad Champion Education Group from Hong Kong.

The inaugural WIMO Final was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2018.

This year, it was held in Universiti Malaya, taking place over two days in January.

It is also known as the “Gold of the Golds” Mathematical Olympiad and a prestigious platform for young mathematicians who have already won gold at the final rounds of either Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO), Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) or Big Bay Bei (BBB).

A total of 31 countries participated in the heats at HKIMO, TIMO and BBB earlier in 2023.
