Concert of classic love songs for charity

SooSuan will be singing to raise funds for Maco’s project to provide schools with computers.

Love songs from the 1930s and 1960s will fill the air at Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC) in 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, on Feb 28 and 29.

Soprano Tan Soo Suan will be performing 23 well-loved classics at a solo charity concert in aid of Medical Awareness Camp Outreach (Maco).

The “Delicate Dreams & Desires” concert will see the Penang-born, award-winning performer better known as SooSuan, end a 17-year hiatus to raise funds for the non-profit organisation.

Maco founding president Datin Dr Low Pek See said besides raising funds, the concert was aimed at increasing awareness of the organisation’s achievements.

“Maco president Dr Toh Cheng Teck and I hope that this concert will create more awareness of Maco’s work so that it can continue this much-needed outreach.”

Proceeds from the concert will go towards Maco’s Computer Empowerment Programme (CEP), which provides refurbished computers and laptops to schools in small towns and rural areas.

“Maco has been doing a fantastic job with its CEP project by donating computers to mostly vernacular schools located in Ipoh and smaller towns and even in schools as far as Sarawak, that lacked computers or computer lab facilities,” said concert co-organiser Datin Susan Lai.

“Maco was initially established to run large-scale charity medical camps in poor urban and rural areas.

“However, Maco pivoted to The School Project (TSP) in early 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when heads of families lost their jobs, schools were halted and B40 students were unable to access online digital learning.

“Seven programmes were successively launched in a concerted effort focused on empowering B40 students and working directly with school boards.

“CEP’s mission is to ensure that no child gets left behind due to lesser circumstances,” said Lai.

Since June 2020, Maco had enabled numerous schools to receive computers and facilitated Internet connectivity for them.

In addition to computers, B40 students also received data plans for Internet access for home online studies during Covid-19 movement restrictions.

“A typical school lab with 30 computers costs about RM6,000 to repurpose, and roughly RM13,000 is necessary for cabling works, data points, switches, furniture and a 55-inch smart TV,” Lai said.

Over the years, nine NGOs, 775 students and 191 schools throughout Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak received 4,752 computers refurbished by Maco.

Over 58,000 students have benefitted from Maco’s projects so far.

The public can support the cause by purchasing tickets for the charity concert on Feb 29.

The concert on Feb 28 is by invitation only.

The concert will be in two parts. The first half is 45 minutes and during the 30-minute intermission, guests can mingle over wine and finger food.

The second half is 45 minutes, thus taking the entire event to about two hours.

“The show is estimated to end by 10pm and we hope guests will stay back after the show to meet the singer. We want it to be one big party,” said Lai.

SooSuan’s outfits are sponsored by KhoonHooi, her shoes by Lewre, while her hair and makeup will be by A Cut Above.

Tickets priced at RM98, RM128, RM248, RM288, RM388, RM488 are available from the onetix.com.my ticketing platform.
