Celebrating Tokyo through imaginary magazine cover art

The five selected pieces by Malaysia-based artists at Tokyoiter exhibition.

The ongoing “The Tokyoiter Exhibition” in Petaling Jaya features 30 different artists’ observations and experiences in Tokyo, Japan.

Held at Temu House in Section 16, works on show include those from five Malaysia-based artists who were selected from an open call last year.

The Tokyoiter, run by Andrew Joyce and David Robert, is a project drawing inspiration from iconic The New Yorker magazine cover art and The Parisianer, a Paris tribute version of the magazine.

It brings together a community of illustration and drawing enthusiasts sharing a passion for unique narratives of Tokyo.

The project pays homage to Tokyo’s vibrant culture, heritage and artistic expression through imaginary/faux magazine cover tributes.

The Tokyoiter captures the spirit of Tokyo remarkably well, offering a glimpse into the city’s diverse and captivating stories.

The Malaysia-based exhibits are “Suica” by Yean Junn Tseng, highlighting the prepaid card as a travel companion and its possibilities; and “Take A Spin” by Sophia Tan Sook Ya, which is a tribute to the artist’s favourite activity, Gachapon.

“Encapsulating Humans of Tokyo” by Chein Shyan Lee is inspired by popular gacha machines on every street corner in Japan, where each capsule captures a moment of diverse street-goers; “Tokyo Groove” by Cawand Dien is a vibrant nod to Tokyo’s cool vibe; and “Not Just For The Young” by Chew Yuin-Y features elderly folk creating art in the park.

The exhibition is open Thurdays to Sundays, 10am to 5pm, until Feb 4.
