A ROOKIE Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) councillor from Amanah wants to boost tourism.
Mohd Montazeri Nordin, who used to work at the Taman Templer Community Service Centre, hoped to be assigned to Zone 11 where Taman Eko-Rimba Komanwel is located.
“With the right focus, we can boost tourism and the local economy, similar to what is being done in Kuala Selangor and Dengkil,” he said after the swearing-in session.
Mohd Montazeri was among 22 councillors appointed to serve until Dec 31, 2025.
From the total, one is an Orang Besar Daerah while 12 are from PKR, five from DAP and four from Amanah.
Other than Mohd Montazeri, the other new councillor is K. Thanabal Krishnan, who is also from Amanah.
Thanabal was formerly a councillor in Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) for three terms.
He hoped to be assigned to Zone 20 to help improve road conditions there.
“I was told that there are at least seven quarries in that zone.
“Due to the large presence of heavy vehicles, the roads are damaged and some areas are flood-prone too,” added Thanabal.
MPS president Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi said two councillors, allocated for Umno, had yet to be appointed.
He said a meeting with the party whips would be held to discuss zoning and distribution of responsibilities.
In his speech, Mohd Yazid urged councillors to take care of the municipal council’s good name.
“It is also important to build a good relationship with department directors and staff to ensure the best services can be rendered to the people.
“Councillors must also understand the objective and rationale of MPS’ actions,” he said.
Fourth-term DAP councillor U Chin Ong said DAP and PKR had to give up a seat each to Umno.
He aimed to focus on improving infrastructure and rubbish collection.
“KDEB Waste Management has announced plans to roll out 100 new compactors in Selayang and Ampang Jaya sometime in March,” added U.
