A RECORD has been set by 810 students in Johor who composed a syair each, which was then compiled into a book.
Kumpulan Pendidikan Yayasan Pelajaran Johor (KPYPJ) general manager Husaini Mokhlas said their contributions were recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the most student participants in a syair book.
A syair is a form of Malay poetry made up of quatrains or four-line stanzas.
The students, aged 13 to 19, were from 78 secondary schools.
“They expressed their love for the king, state, districts and its leaders into poetry,” Husaini said at the MBOR certificate presentation ceremony.
“We then compiled their works into a book titled Kumpulan Syair Putera Puteri Hujung Medini.”
He added that the entries were edited by Mohd Rosli Bakir, who was assisted by Norhaida Ahmad.
MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh presented the certificate to KPYPJ chief executive Haslinda Abu Bakar in Johor Baru.
Husaini said the book was a way of getting the young excited about the creative process.
“The book also provides a chance to learn about Malay poetry.
“We want to help produce more creative Johoreans,” he said, adding that copies would be distributed to schools. — By YEE XIANG YUN
