Online trading company sponsors prosthesis for seven-year-old pachyderm Ellie

MALAYSIA’s youngest elephant amputee is getting a new prosthesis, thanks to an online trading company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

Deriv, in collaboration with a Malaysian prosthetics firm, engineered an artificial leg for Ellie, a seven-year-old elephant that lost her front leg at the age of one due to a snare.

Crafted from durable carbon fibre and featuring a robust ethylene vinyl acetate base, the prosthesis not only supports Ellie’s considerable weight but also significantly enhances her natural gait.

Ellie, a resident of Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre in Pahang, got her first prosthesis at age two, but new ones were needed as she grew.

In a statement, prosthetics designer Yarham Hadeng said, “Deriv’s sponsorship made this vital upgrade possible and we’re proud to be part of Ellie’s remarkable journey to recovery.”

Deriv chief human resources officer Seema Hallon said, “Our approach to CSR goes beyond financial contributions.

“It’s woven into who we are as an organisation.

“We envision Deriv Life as a platform for championing causes that resonate with our values and the personal beliefs of every member of the Deriv family.”

Deriv Life is the company’s CSR programme.

Over the past year, Deriv has embarked on various initiatives including sponsoring a team in the 4L Trophy rally, which raised funds and provided essential school supplies to underprivileged children in Morocco.

Deriv is actively engaged in expanding CSR efforts across the company’s 20 global offices, with a specific focus on addressing local needs and fostering positive social and environmental impact.

The company also recognises that effective CSR is an ongoing and evolving journey.
