Selangor considering two-day ban on plastic bags

SELANGOR may implement a weekly two-day ban on plastic bags or raising charges for plastic bags as is being done in Penang.

State tourism, environment, green technology and Orang Asli affairs committee caretaker chairman Hee Loy Sian said this was part of the measures to cut down plastic bag usage in the state.

"The collection from the plastic bag fee has increased from previous years with RM6.6mil in 2020, RM8.5mil (2021) and RM10.3mil in 2022.

"It appears that people are not dissuaded from using plastic bags despite the charge.

"Currently, the committee is in the process of reviewing the guidelines for implementing the plastic bag charge in Selangor.

"The review includes aspects of the implementation methods, determining plastic bag-free days, enforcement measures, and promoting campaigns to discourage the use of single-use plastic," said Hee during the Selangor State Small Grants Presentation Ceremony for Environmental and Green Technology 2023 at Bangunan SUK, Shah Alam.

Hee added that the state government intended to implement a complete ban on plastic bags by 2025, subject to the availability of alternatives like biodegradable plastic bags.

It was reported on May 9, that the Federal government announced its goal to completely eliminate the usage of plastic bags in all premises and sectors of trade and commerce nationwide by the year 2025.
