Enthusiasts will have a chance to prove their mettle at the Malaysia Masters Badminton Association’s (MMBA) inaugural tournament on Aug 19 and 20.

MMBA president Datuk Irwan Shah Abdullah, better known as DJ Dave, expected some 500 players to take part.

“Even though this is MMBA’s first time organising a tournament, we work closely with experienced partners.

“This tournament is also endorsed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia,” he said during the launch at Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur.

Present were MMBA vice-president Prabha Karan Kerisnan, deputy president Chan Wan Seong and committee members Jimmy Wong Yat Kwan and Seluarize Sinnakali. Also present was actor Fizz Fairuz.

Dave hoped the tournament would encourage a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians, especially, senior citizens as badminton was suitable for people of all ages.

The tournament will take place at Tops Arena Empire in Bandar Damai Perdana in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Participants are grouped according to their ages, ranging from 35 to 59 and 60 to 75, and above.

Each group is further divided into several categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Professionals.

There is a special category for father and son. The son must not be older than 15.

There will be cash prizes for the Professional category – RM1,000 and RM500 for the winner and runner-up, respectively. The third and fourth-placers will receive RM250 each.

Registration closes on July 19. The first 500 participants to register will receive a free T-shirt and vouchers from Yonex Sunrise.

The registration fee is RM120 per person for one category, or RM200 for two categories. A person can participate in a maximum of two categories.
