Clash of division chiefs likely

Parti Utama Rakyat chairman Mohd Daud plans to stand in Dengkil.

TWO Sepang division heads from rival parties may face off in the Dengkil constituency in the Selangor polls on Aug 12.

They are Sepang Bersatu chief Datuk Suhaimi Ghazali and Sepang Umno chief Noorazli Said.

Suhaimi is not a new face as he was Dengkil assemblyman between 2004 and 2008, when he was with Umno.

The incumbent Dengkil assemblyman Adhif Syan Abdullah from Bersatu is expected to make way for Suhaimi in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Adhif Syan had won the seat in GE14 in 2018 with a majority of 6,934 votes when Bersatu was under the Pakatan Harapan umbrella.

His win in 2018 was the first time the Umno stronghold had crumbled.

The Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional pact may strategise to field an Umno candidate this time to reclaim the seat which is predominantly made up of Malay voters.

Another party expected to join the fray in Dengkil is Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

Its deputy chairman S. Arutcelvan said PSM was eyeing several seats in Selangor, with Dengkil being one of them.

The candidate could likely be Dengkil PSM chief Dr Darren Ong Chung Lee.

Ong is a Sarawakian with a PhD in mathematics, and is a professor at a private university in Sepang.

The environmental activist has been living in Selangor for two decades and in Sepang for eight years.

Parti Utama Rakyat chairman Datuk Mohd Daud Leong Abdullah said he would be contesting in Dengkil.

The lawyer, who runs his own firm, was one of eight candidates who contested for the Sepang parliamentary seat in GE15.

However, he lost, securing only 264 votes.

The Tanjung Sepat seat is also expected to see a close fight.

Incumbent Tanjung Sepat assemblyman Borhan Aman Syah (PH-PKR), who is the Selangor rural development, traditional village, Malay customs, culture and state heritage committee caretaker chairman, is tipped to defend the seat.

Borhan won by a majority of 2,704 votes in GE14.

Bersatu Srikandi chief Datuk Seri Rina Harun, who lost the Sepang parliamentary seat in GE15 by 8,949 votes, may be fielded either in Tanjung Sepat or Sungai Pelek.

As for Sungai Pelek, there will be a new face contesting under PH as incumbent assemblyman Ronnie Liu (PH-DAP) who won with a majority of 6,586 votes in GE14, had announced last month that he was quitting politics.

When contacted, Liu said he hoped that a local DAP leader would be fielded so that the candidate would understand the issues in the constitutuency better.

It had been reported that PAS would like to contest in Sungai Pelek.

Selangor PAS secretary Roslan Shahir was quoted in an article by The Star online on March 10, that the party would like to contest in Sungai Pelek and Kuala Kubu Baru since both seats have over 50% Malay voters.
