ALL rivalries were set aside as students from four schools in Penang came together for prom night at a hotel in George Town.
This was the first time that such an event was held and it was attended by more than 200 boys and girls from St Xavier’s Institution (SXI), Penang Free School (PFS), St George’s Girls’ School (SGGS) and Methodist Girls’ School (MGS).
The students from Form Three to Form Five were dressed in their best at the event themed Ad Astra Per Aspera (through adversity to the stars).
Organising chairperson and SXI head prefect Nicholas Gunn, 17, said the theme symbolised the challenges that the students had gone through.
“The event took three months to put together with my close friend Jax Ch’ng who is also PFS head prefect.
“Other than being friends, we were also teammates in the Penang floorball team so preparing for the event was easy despite the rivalry between our schools.”
Nicholas and Jax appointed two representatives from the girls’ schools, Retcheal Lia and Sabrina Chong.
Nicholas added that most of the preparations happened after their SPM examination.
“We called ourselves the “High Committee” and got everyone looking forward to the event.
“We played games, danced and made new friends before wrapping things up just before midnight,” he said.
Nicholas said his elder brother held a similar event four years ago but it involved only two schools, namely SXI and SGGS.
