THE Bukit Kukus paired road project was a big boost for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said that the project by the state government and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) was completed at a cost of RM378.2mil. It was dubbed the highest overpass in the country.

Spanning 3.2km, it winds around Bukit Kukus from Lebuh Bukit Jambul on the Bayan Lepas side to Jalan Tun Sardon and Paya Terubong in Ayer Itam.

“The elevated highway has helped residents staying in Ayer Itam and Relau to reduce their travelling time from between 20 and 30 minutes to just five to 10,” said Chow said during the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency open house at Padang Koperasi in Sungai Gelugor.

Speaking about Pakatan Harapan’s reign in Penang for the last 15 years, Chow said credit must be given to the community, private sector, non-governmental organisations and other parties for their key part in the state’s development.

“We were often sidelined by the previous national leaderships,” he told Buletin Mutiara.

“However, through the collective efforts of these groups, we moved forward to implement many projects for the people.

“As the state election is around the corner, I urge voters to make the right choice so we can continue our good work for all.

“The people of Penang have proven that the choice they made in 2008 has led to excellent results for the state’s economy.

“With Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim now our Prime Minister, I am confident more good things will happen, especially in addressing key issues.

“I am proud to say that we are on track with the Malaysia Madani concept as envisioned by the Prime Minister himself.”

Chow was also full of praise for Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who is now the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and Seri Delima assemblyman-cum-Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid for their hard work for their constituencies.

“They were very resourceful when the Covid-19 pandemic started. Many B40 families were given financial aid.”

In his speech, Ramkarpal said that being ruled by a unity government consisting of different parties should not stop the country from progressing.

“Different opinions cannot be a hindrance to the country’s development.

“Ahead of the state polls, we hope to maintain unity through this relatively new government under Anwar,” he said.

Hundreds of locals in Bukit Gelugor flocked to the Raya open house to sample delights like satay, ais kacang and asam laksa.

Also at the open house were Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee, then-MBPP secretary Datuk A. Rajendran and former Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai.
