SHOPPERS and traders at Jelutong market in Penang were treated to a surprise visit by officers from the state police department who came to the area on a goodwill trip.

Led by outgoing state police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the visit was in appreciation of the public’s cooperation with the police force.

He said his presence at the morning market was to “thank Penangites” for their cooperation during his 20-month tenure as state police chief.

“What we achieved today will not have materialised without the public’s support, regardless of their race, religion or political beliefs,” he told reporters after the visit, adding he was leaving Penang with a heavy heart.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily is set to be appointed the new Kuala Lumpur police chief, replacing Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim, who has been promoted to Bukit Aman management department director.

During his visit, Comm Mohd Shuhaily spent about an hour walking around, mingling and chatting with traders and the public.

Police personnel also handed out leaflets on crime prevention and Amanita, a nationwide programme being conducted by the police to engage housewives in neighbourhood safety and raise public awareness about scams.

Joining the police on the walkabout were Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong, Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim and high-ranking officers of the state police department.

Rayer thanked Comm Mohd Shuhaily for his service to Penang and wished him success in his new post in Kuala Lumpur.

“I would like to thank Comm Mohd Shuhaily and his officers for their excellent duty to Penangites,” he said.

“Congratulations to you, and we hope you will find success in your career going forward.”
