THE National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), an agency under Higher Education Ministry (KPT), continues to provide many initiatives to benefit students and improve their welfare, especially the PTPTN borrowers.

One initiative is the KPT-PTPTN Prihatin Study Assistance programme that provides subsistence aid to underprivileged students at institutions of higher learning, to help ease their financial burden.

The agency recently provided a one-off assistance of RM500 each to 462 eligible students at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.

The recipients were all PTPTN borrowers from the low-income group and the aid was channelled to the students’ bank accounts.

The university collaborated with the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department to to ensure only deserving and poor students received the cash aid.

The Prihatin Study Assistance presentation ceremony was held at USM in conjunction with an USM iftar event.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin officiated the event.

Also present at the event were USM board of governors chairman Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin, vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed and PTPTN chief executive Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid.

PTPTN was established in 1997 to provide education loans to Malaysian citizens so they could continue their studies at local public or private institutions of higher learning recognised by the government.

During the 26 years since its establishment, PTPTN has helped produce many citizens who contributed to the development of the country.
