GE15: Lee Chong Wei welcomes support for youth badminton, regardless of politics

SHAH ALAM: There were shouts and groans across the court as former world number one shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei teamed up with Barisan Nasional’s Sungai Buloh candidate Khairy Jamaluddin and smashed their way across a friendly badminton match.

"I came here in hopes of inspiring the younger generation to play badminton and be engaged in sports," said Lee.

"I am willing to lend my support to badminton events, irrespective of whether organised by Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan, as long as my schedule allows it," he added.

He said that he was at the event because he was invited by Khairy, adding that he knew Khairy from his days as the Youth and Sports Minister.

Lee and Khairy played two games, first teaming up with event organiser Lee Tick Wah and his partner, then playing on opposite sides of the court where they paired up with two youth players.

The shuttler's presence drew a large crowd to the event held at Dewan Badminton Yosin Kampung Subang, Jalan Pekan Subang, U6 Shah Alam.

Prior to the match, Khairy had flagged off Barisan’s 4x4 "war truck" convoy at a restaurant in Pekan Subang.

Seven candidates are vying for the Sungai Buloh seat in this 15th General Election.

Besides Khairy, the other candidate hopefuls are Ramanan Ramakrishnan (Pakatan Harapan - PKR), Mohd Ghazali Md Hamin (Perikatan Nasional - PAS), Mohd Akmal Mohd Yusoff (Gerakan Tanah Air - Pejuang), Ahmad Jufliz Faiza (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) as well as Independent candidates Syed Razak Alsagoff and Nurhaslinda Basri (Sifu Linda).
