Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police are in talks to set up a second command centre to allow law enforcers real-time access to the capital’s network of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for crime prevention and traffic management.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said there were currently 10,000 smart CCTV cameras in the city.

She said both agencies were working closely in establishing the proposed facility, which would complement the existing Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre in Bukit Jalil.

“Although we have smart CCTV in the city, we rely heavily on traffic police to go on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow.

“Because of that, these agencies are in close contact regarding matters like closing a road for city runs or concerts.

“These decisions are made after discussing with the police,” said Yeoh after handing over 12 sets of computers and printers to the Sentul District Police Headquarters yesterday.

The RM60,000 contribution of equipment was provided by the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Implementation Coordination Unit (WPKL ICU) under Yeoh’s allocation as Segambut MP.

Four sets each were distributed to the Sentul, Jinjang and Kepong police stations.

The devices will be placed at the station front desks to allow officers to prepare reports, manage data and prepare documentation more efficiently, replacing outdated machinery that can no longer support current software.

Yeoh added that MPs could allocate ICU funds to agencies within their constituencies based on urgency and need.

“Previously, we contributed water pumps and air conditioners to the Fire and Rescue Department stations in our area.

“The front desk plays a crucial role and the new computers will enable police officers to process public reports more efficiently,” she said.

In addition, Yeoh contributed RM100,000 to the police force under her ministry’s allocation to cover allowances and overtime pay for officers assisting DBKL with traffic management during major cultural events like the KL Festival.

Also present at the handover were Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam and his deputy Supt Jasni Zolpa.
