Wing Chun exponent gets into record books, makes master proud

THE contribution of local martial arts master Aaron Boey in popularising Wing Chun has been recognised by Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

The 44-year-old Wing Chun master was recognised for “Most Wing Chun Performance by An Individual” – with 112 nationwide including the special performance for Ip Man 3 movie launch with Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen.

Boey received his certificate from Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh during a presentation at Phoenix Asia Rebirth Campus in Chulia Street Ghaut, Penang.

Wing Chun is a Southern Chinese style of kung fu and Boey said Penang had many events where practitioners were invited to perform.

“There are events that are organised and supported by the state government such as Occupy Beach Street and Armenian Street’s Got Talent,” said Boey.

“They give us an opportunity to perform Wing Chun so people will know what it is about and from there, we get more invites,” he added.

Boey has been practising the martial art since 2008 and has his own training centre in Datuk Keramat.

He has a multi-racial group of about 50 students aged between six and 58, including foreigners.

He enjoys doing Wing Chun as he feels it is important to preserve traditional martial arts.

“Wing Chun, silat and any other martial art must be safeguarded,” he said, encouraging teenagers regardless of their race to take up Wing Chun.

Also present were Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee, Penang Wushu, Lion, Dragon, Dance Association president Datuk H’ng Ban Choon as well as Phoenix Asia Academy of Technology founder and president Kenneth Phoenix Quah.

Chow in his speech praised Boey for making it into MBOR and said his achievement was something Penang folk should be proud of.

“I am sure as a direct disciple of Grandmaster Ip Man’s son, Sifu Ip Ching, you have made your sifu proud,” he said.

Encouraging everyone interested in martial arts to learn Wing Chun, Chow said it was a good way to channel energy positively.
