HOSPITAL Segamat’s new block is expected to begin operating in stages from October.

State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the RM75.3mil building had hit the 95.2% completion mark.

“The expansion project started about four years ago in early 2018 but due to various factors including the Covid-19 pandemic and changes in government, it was delayed a few times.

“It is finally set to be ready at the end of this month for it to be handed over to the Health Ministry in September before it can open its doors to the public in the following month.

“The two-storey building will cater to the 222,000 residents in Segamat and is also expected to provide medical services to patients from Pahang and Negri Sembilan,” he said when interviewed.

The new building will have 37 ward beds, four operating theatres, an intensive care unit with 18 beds and high-dependency unit with eight beds.

It will also have a central sterile supply department, respiratory and hemodynamics unit plus an IT and communications unit.

A total of 169 car parking spots and 72 motorcycle lots will be provided for visitors.

Ling said the new wing would be connected to the existing hospital building via a link bridge to provide convenience.

“I believe the new facilities will enhance the hospital’s existing services that currently include three operating theatres and it cuts the waiting time for those who need surgery.

“The Health Ministry is adding 30 doctors and looking at increasing the number of medical staff at different levels,” he said.

In addition to the hospital, Ling said upgrades of two health clinics in Segamat were underway too.

“The one in Palong Timur is about 80% completed and we believe it can be handed over by the middle of next year,” he said.

Ling added that the clinic in Jalan Muar, Segamat, would be upgraded to cater to a larger number of patients.

“The RM26mil project is at the 15% completion mark and I believe the authorities and contractors will monitor the construction so it can be completed by mid-2024,” he said.
