THE Selangor government has set up a standing committee to manage and deal with climate change factors contributing to disasters.
State tourism, environment, green technology and Orang Asli affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the setting up of the Selangor Climate Change Action Council or “Iklim Selangor” was given the green light by the state executive council in May.
“Iklim Selangor will act as an advisory body and think-tank to assist the state in planning, implementing and monitoring programmes and projects as well as plan and manage solutions related to climate change and the environment,” he said in a statement.
“It will also help identify actions needed to achieve sustainable development in the state.”
The committee’s objectives include identifying environmental issues and proposing solutions to the state, outlining plans and strategies related to climate change as well as coming up with adaptation and mitigation responses.
Iklim Selangor will work to raise awareness and climate change literacy as well as strengthen institutions through policy and programmes
The panel will comprise officials from state and federal departments and agencies, government-linked companies, academics and technical experts as well as NGOs.
