WORLD-RENOWNED Sutra Foundation has opened a branch in Ipoh.
Located in Lorong Haji Marzuki, the new branch is a collaboration with Persatuan Seni Tarian dan Pendidikan Antarabangsa (PSTPA).
It is part of an effort to promote excellence in the arts and culture and also to scout for talents and develop an outstanding team of dancers in Perak.
Sutra Foundation founder Datuk Ramli Ibrahim believes that the foundation can discover many dance talents in Perak and reach new heights.
“We need to celebrate our rich diversity of cultures and enrich our youths,” he said during the branch’s opening.
Sutra Foundation, under the guidance of Ramli, has performed all over the world including the US, the UAE and India.
He is one of the most accomplished Indian classical dancers and choreographers in the world, bringing recognition to Indian classical dance, especially Odissi, with his critically acclaimed performances.
He has been acknowledged as “Living Heritage” and “Living Treasure” by Malaysia and Unesco respectively.
He was also bestowed the Padma Shri award, one of the highest civilian honours in India in recognition of his contribution to the arts.
PSTPA president Audrey Kwan said dance, arts and culture played a great role in human development.
“It is our mission to place local talents onto the international dance arena and we will be talent scouting, giving training, creating dance films and staging productions,” she said.
The foundation will kick off with a three-day Odissi workshop and talk by Ramli this Friday and Sunday.
The session is open to experienced and non-experienced dancers aged between six and 16.
There will also be an audition to join PSTPA and Sutra Foundation on Saturday.
