THE inaugural Selangor Aviation Show (SAS 2021) from Nov 25 to 27 will focus on re-energising the business and general aviation industry following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hosted by Selangor government and organised by Invest Selangor Bhd, the aviation show will take place at SkyPark Regional Aviation Centre in Subang and is expected to draw more than 5,000 visitors.

Some 43 local and international companies from the aerospace and aviation industry will participate in the event, either on the tarmac or at exhibition booths at the venue.

“After several delays in fixing the event dates, we decided earlier this year that we needed to proceed with the event to assist the industry after the devastation caused by the pandemic,” said Selangor investment, industry and trade, small and medium industries committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim during the launch.

“SAS 2021 will mainly focus on the business and general aviation community in and out of Subang Airport.

“We announced a target of about 30 exhibitors in March this year and we are happy to update that we have exceeded that target for this year’s edition.”

Teng also said that the event would be the culmination of work done by Invest Selangor over the past several years stemming from the formation of the Selangor Darul Ehsan Aerospace Industry Coordination Office division, formed under the recommendation of the Selangor Aerospace Action Plan 2020-2030.

“SAS 2021 will be open to industry professionals and trade visitors for the first two days and to the public on the third day, especially to tertiary students to inspire them to consider the aerospace industry as their calling for a career when their time comes.”

Some hangars and apron space will be deployed for the exhibitions and other parallel activities, including for static aircraft displays at the venue.

“Despite the interest both from the industry and the public, we are targeting around 5,000 visitors for this inaugural show in light of the current pandemic situation and to allow for proper SOP and enhanced social distancing,” Teng added.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that while expectations were for the aerospace industry to start recovering from 2022 onwards and potentially reach pre-pandemic levels of travel and activity by 2024, the state government believed that the effort should start now.

“Across the world, we saw many airlines collapsing during the pandemic except for cargo carriers. Air traffic for travellers has reduced tremendously, and it will take years for the sector to recover.

“However, business and general aviation had proven to be more resilient as the rate of decline was lower than airlines and the recovery was much quicker and more sustainable.

“Over the years, Selangor has emphasised the need to develop the aerospace ecosystem by promoting investment in industry sub-sectors such as airlines, airports, aerospace infrastructure and manufacturing activities.

“Going forward, Selangor is seeing the significant potential for accelerated growth in a lesser noticed sub-sector of the industry, that of the business and general aviation sub-sector.”

Amirudin also urged business and general aviation industry players to work closely with the state government.

“Put aside the uncertainties and pessimism and take the opportunity that SAS 2021 presents a ‘reset button’ for the industry as we start to emerge from the pandemic,” he said.

Two major international business aviation original equipment manufacturers — Dassault Aviation and Embraer — will be participating in Selangor’s maiden air show and will be bringing their aircrafts to be displayed at SAS 2021.

The event is supported by Matrade and its strategic partner, the International Trade and Industry Ministry and National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office.

The event will be open to the public on Nov 27. However, visitors must register and schedule their visits accordingly for the organiser to monitor the crowd.
