Providing equal opportunities

Recipients of Ara Damansara Rotary Club’s ‘A Student A Laptop’ initiative at SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya with school staff and members.

A TOTAL of 22 students received free laptops thanks to a special Covid-19 project by Rotary Club of Ara Damansara (RCAD).

They received a notebook computer each under the club’s “A Student A Laptop” initiative which also provided 10 computers for a computer lab at SMK (P) Taman Petaling in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Club president Chiew Teck Wee said the project was aimed at giving students equal opportunities to education.

The Form 4,5 and 6 students were selected based on an essay submission, household income level, academic results and recommendations by counselling teachers at their schools.

“Realising the urgent need for students to have suitable digital devices to access the Internet for online classes, we came up with this project.

“We hope these devices will help students study better and excel in their SPM and STPM exams, ” said Chiew.

The community service project is an ongoing effort under the Rotary Covid-19 Emergency Relief Aid which aims to reduce the impact of the pandemic on Malaysians, especially those in the lower-income group.

A handover ceremony was held at SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya for 12 students as well as five students from the neighbouring Catholic High School.

Present were La Salle principal Dr Teh Lah Hoong and Catholic High principal Lau Yan Hong.

Earlier, five notebook computers were handed to student mentees of RCAD’s Rotary Education Fund programme.

Chiew said RCAD had supported 63 families from the B40 group and refugees in Klang Valley, donated 550 coveralls for frontliners at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Selayang and University Malaya Medical Centre and arranged 20 free cataract operations for the elderly.

“These projects were made possible because of the generous donations by our members, project partners, Rotary District 3300 and the public, ” he said.

Chiew added that Rotary clubs globally had been helping local communities regardless of race, religion, creed, gender or political affiliation.
