SMK Raja Perempuan in Ipoh bagged third place in a national-level clean public toilet competition.
Principal Datin Rogayah Shukor said this was the first time the school took part in the National Level Clean Public Toilet Recognition competition organised by the Housing and Local Government Ministry last year.
“Our school is 70 years old and the toilet structure reflects this, but its cleanliness is not compromised.
“We ensure that students keep the toilets clean, ” she said after receiving a certificate and plaque from Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.
In the primary school category, SK Meru Raya won third place.
Rogayah said many foreign tourists to Malaysia had complained about dirty public toilets.
“To create awareness and educate the public on the importance of keeping toilets clean, we must instil this habit in children from a young age, like in schools, ” she stressed.
SK Meru Raya headmaster Norhisham Abd Shukor said the school opened in 2018 and this was the first time the school had participated in the competition.
“Our building is quite new and we always emphasise on keeping the premises clean among pupils.
“The cleanliness of the toilets are maintained at all times and not just for the competition, ” he added.
The first prize in both categories went to schools from other states.
Rumaizi said both schools were a good example to follow by other schools, especially in Ipoh. — By MANJIT KAUR
