KUANTAN: A Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) lecturer has developed a vein display instrument that bagged a Malaysia Commercialisation Year (MCY) award.
The device, produced by Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim from the faculty of electrical and electronic engineering technology, won the top prize in the new innovator category.
The palm-sized electronic instrument consists of a special camera and screen that displays the location of veins without touching the skin.
“This device resulted from the demand of the medical industry and could help doctors and medical officers to find the location of their patients’ blood vessels or veins.
“Currently, more than 90% of patients in hospitals need intravenous procedures for therapeutic treatment while more than one billion procedures are performed annually to obtain blood samples for health tests, ” said Mohd Zamri.
He thanked the university for its support in developing this technology and also for the grant from the Bumiputra Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju).
UMP also won a consolation prize for the entrepreneurial researcher category with the “Sleek Pump” product developed by Dr Mohamad Firdaus Basrawi from the mechanical and automotive engineering technology faculty.
The battery-operated honey sucker is easier to carry and is able to increase the efficiency of drawing kelulut honey without affecting its quality.
Mohamad Firdaus’ research also received the support of several university research grants including the MyRA Incentive Fund (University-Community Technology Solutions Platform Fund).
The awards ceremony was held online and launched by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
UMP said in a statement that this year’s victory was an important indicator of the consistency of the university’s excellent commercial ecosystem, which in 2019 also produced two MCY winners.
