THE first virtual hiking event in Penang called “The Lions Virtual Climb for Green, Penang Hill 2020” will take place from now until Jan 31.

The virtual hiking event allows participants to hike up to the P84 stop of Penang Hill at their own pace and time by scanning the QR code placed at designated locations.

The 2.4km hike starts and ends at Big Ben Breakfast in Jalan Kebun Bunga, Penang.

Lions Club of George Town president Vincent Yen said the event was the first virtual hiking event making use of QR codes.

He said their main objective for the event was to raise funds to maintain the P84 stop as the space was a public-private initiative that is self-funded.

“We hope to promote a healthy lifestyle through hiking.

“We also wish to promote Penang Hill as a destination for tourists, ” he said in a press conference near Jalan Kebun Bunga.

P84 committee chairman Datuk Jimmy Ong said they hoped to raise funds to maintain the area.

“If possible, we would like to upgrade the facilities in the area for the comfort of cyclists and hikers.”

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, who was present, said he was glad that the event was carefully thought out and planned.

“Despite the pandemic, people still need to exercise and connect with nature.

“It is good to hold virtual programmes to connect one another using an application.

“As we need to do things individually and adhere to the standard operating procedures, it helps if we can think out of the box and do things creatively.

“Now with the ongoing pandemic, many things have changed, giving rise to virtual events instead, ” he said.

The Lions Virtual Climb for Green, Penang Hill 2020 uses a self check-in system with the first QR code stationed at Big Ben Breakfast.

Participation fee is RM100 each.

Those joining the event will receive a dri-fit T-shirt, free health screening from Pantai Hospital worth RM128, a free name imprint on the legacy plaque at P84 rest area, an e-certificate, coupons, e-coupons and a free bicycle ride at Audi Dream Farm in Balik Pulau.

To register for the virtual hike, visit or send a WhatsApp message to 010-564 1038.
