Moving ahead with plans to upgrade digital network


TWENTY-FIVE telecommunication towers being built in Kedah are expected to be operational in stages starting in the first quarter of next year, the state legislative assembly was told.

Information, communications and multimedia committee chairman Wan Romani Wan Salim also said that for the fixed line broadband service under the Suburban Broadband Project, 4,736 more connections were still in the implementation stage.

He added that the connections were expected to be completed in stages by the end of this year.

Replying to a question from Azhar Ibrahim (PAS-Ayer Hitam) on Wednesday at the Kedah assembly sitting, he said locations with poor access or no 4G coverage had also been identified.

For the mobile broadband service, Wan Romani said a total of 105 new towers would be built while 1,162 existing communication transmitters would be upgraded to have 4G technology.

“All these initiatives will be done in stages from this year until 2022, ” added Wan Romani.

In addition, Wan Romani said that under the Jendela plan, the fibre optic network would be expanded to 91,393 sites in the state which would provide access to gigabit network speeds. -- Bernama
