UNDER Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) guidelines, 2% of parking spots should be reserved for the disabled (OKU).
However, in certain places, this guideline is not fully adhered to.
With that in mind, Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said she planned to ensure more OKU parking was created in her constituency, with particular attention on older commercial areas.
Jamaliah said this after launching a new carpark and ramp for the disabled at SS26/8, Taman Mayang Jaya, Petaling Jaya.
The facility cost RM19,490.
She said the site was chosen to cater to the disabled and elderly residents of Taman Mayang Jaya.
“Many of them frequent the supermarket to get their daily necessities while a clinic is also located on the same row.
“In view of this, my office requested that the OKU parking spot be equipped with a ramp in compliance with the Universal Building by-laws.
“We worked closely with the MBPJ’s Planning Department’s universal design unit on this, ” she said.
Also present were MBPJ councillor Sakinah Bibi Nagoor and MBPJ planning department universal design assistant officer Hafizah Abdullah.
