Avoid food wastage

Alya says it is best for donors to check on the exact number of packs needed.

THOSE wanting to donate or sponsor food during Ramadan are advised to donate only what was needed by the recipients to avoid wastage.

Sols 24/7 Malaysia chief operating officer Alya Syahida Allias said it was best for donors to ask the people they wanted to donate to, the exact number of packs needed at any one time.

“There are many people donating food to the doctors, nurses, firemen, police and army among other frontliners on duty during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“However, there is often an oversupply of food that ended up in the bin.

“Some of these frontliners are so busy working that when they get the food after their shift is over, the food has turned bad.

“While people are generous in giving, I hope they will also ensure that their donation truly benefits those they are giving to, ” she said.

Alya said it was best for those who wanted to donate but did not know how to go about it, to support their trusted non-governmental organisations (NGO) if they found it tough to do it on their own.

“For example, Kuala Lumpur City Hall has appointed many NGOs to help them with the over 700 homeless who are being sheltered at various temporary homeless centres in the city.

“They are now served meals up to six times a day.

“During Ramadan, we need extra cash to prepare proper meals for sahur and buka puasa for the poor.

“We accept food and drinks too but make sure that it is tasty and edible at the time of delivery.

“If the public are unsure of which NGO to work with, they can refer to the list on our NGOhub website, www.ngohub.asia. We have verified all those on the list have been registered and audited, ” she said.

Alya said donations could also be in other forms like clothes, educational needs and women hygiene kits.
