PENANG’S first Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) will open by the middle of next year.

Penang Development Corporation (PDC) deputy general manager Aziz Bakar said the establishment of UTC would attract the public to Komtar.

“The project will benefit both the state and federal governments.

“News about its impending opening has attracted many parties who are seeking more information on the units available for rent in Komtar,” he told a press conference recently.

Aziz said the opening of UTC at Level 2 would spur economic activities at the commercial centre.

Among the government agencies which will operate at UTC Komtar are Public Services Commission, Immigration Department, Road Transport Department, National Registration Department, Health Ministry, National Higher Education Fund Corporation, Inland Revenue Board, Royal Malaysian Police, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, Information Department, JOBS Malaysia and Entrepreneur Development Ministry.

Aziz said the UTC would be located on the second and third floors of the 65-storey building and open from 10am to 10pm except public holidays.Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng welcomed the decision by the Finance Ministry in choosing Komtar as the site for the UTC.

He said the decision to set up another centre in the state would depend on the response of visitors there.

When asked if the opening of the UTC would create parking problems in Komtar area, Teh said a study was conducted on the parking issue there and the surrounding areas when the proposal was first submitted.

“There are at least 1,000 parking lots available around Komtar.

“The public can also use free public transportation provided by the state, as well as the services of e-hailing providers to avoid parking problems,” he said.
