MELAKA: The Melaka government, through Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), will turn a new durian variety called Lima Jari into a signature agriculture produce of the state.
State agriculture, entrepreneurs development, co-operative and agro-based industries committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee said the durian was among the local varieties of high-quality fruits originating from Asahan in Jasin.
“At first glance it looks like the durian imported from neighbouring Thailand but it is actually from Melaka,’’ he said after launching Melaka Fruit Fiesta 2019 at the Melaka Tropical Fruit Farm in Sungai Udang.
He said the durian tasted good, sweet and its flesh was thick compared to other types of durian.
Norhizam said a Lima Jari durian weighed about 4kg and sold at RM12 per kg.
He reiterated that the durian had huge potential to be developed.
In addition, he said Fama too was making efforts to commercialise the Cinta durian or D88 as a new icon for seasonal fruits in Melaka.
Norhizam said that although Melaka was not a major durian producer for the export market, it exported nine tonnes of frozen Musang King every month to China.
He said on average, the state produced about 100 tonnes of durian worth RM20mil a month for the local market. — Bernama
