THE Save Our Rainforest Race (SORR) this year will be held at Taman Botanikal Melaka, Ayer Keroh in Melaka on March 30.
Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (Peka), which is organising the event for the seventh time, hopes to get 1,000 participants for the 14.4km run as well as replant 500 trees around the botanical gardens.
With an objective of creating awareness and instilling a sense of love and care towards the environment among Malaysians, the tagline for the event jointly organised with the Melaka Forestry Department is “Save Our Rainforest to Save Our Wildlife”.
The unique event will see participants working in pairs to navigate across the forest to complete tasks at selected checkpoints throughout the course until they reach the replanting area where they will then plant the saplings.
After that, the participants will continue the return leg of the course.
Peka president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed, who launched the race in Kuala Lumpur, hoped the eco event would create greater awareness of the environment.
“Malaysia’s wildlife has been abused and killed not only by poachers but because of human-animal conflict and the destruction of their habitat.
“Cases of gibbon trafficking, elephant and tiger intrusions are increasing because most Malaysians are not interested in solving these issues,” she added.
“I don’t understand how Malaysians can allow Mother Nature to suffer. As children of this world, it is our duty to cherish and treat Mother Nature with utmost respect and protect her at all costs.
“Help us remind fellow Malaysians about their duty to this ‘mother’ that we all share and join us in the race to save our wildlife,” said Shariffa Sabrina.
Also present at the launch was Melaka Forestry Department director Azni Rahman Abdul Wahid.
The registration fee for the run is RM160 per team, which includes breakfast and lunch, medal, T-shirt, bib number and souvenirs. Runners are also eligible for the lucky draw.
