Sending a green message via dance

YOUNG and adorable performers took to the stage at Penang Youth Centre in Acheen Street to showcase traditional dances based on the theme ‘Save the Earth’.

Three teams of 30 students came together for the dance performance to highlight the environmental situation in Malaysia recently.

The students were from the Penang Drama and Theatre Club, which was established last year by Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to promote arts and culture.

They performed scenes through traditional Malay, Indian and Chinese dances to depict the effects of pollution and the suffering it can bring to humanity and plant life.

City councillor Grace Teoh, who presented the award to the Indian dance team for best performance, said the club’s efforts were paying off.

“We initially started traditional dance classes to ensure that the young ones will learn about our unique cultures and preserve them.

“To see that they actually took a liking to the dances and are able to express environmental issues through their dances is a sign that we are in the right direction,” she said.

The dance showcase was the second series this year, while the first series was in July with the theme of culture.
