JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru shopping scene is set to become more exciting with the opening of Ikea Tebrau and Paradigm Mall this month.
Swedish furniture chain Ikea is slated to open its doors to the public on Nov 16.
This would be its third store in Malaysia and the largest in South-East Asia at 46,731sqm.
Its South-East Asia retail director Mike King is optimistic Ikea Tebrau would do well.
“It is a great time to open a store in the south of Malaysia now and we look forward to an even better year next year with three stores in the country,” he said.
King said Ikea Tebrau is in response to demand for affordable and quality furniture and expects the store to be accessible to some 1.8 million people living within a 60-minute drive from the outlet located in Desa Tebrau.

When Ikea Tebrau opens, customers would be able to enjoy over 8,000 home furnishing products and get home decor inspiration from 54 showrooms.
The outlet would also be equipped with 1,771 parking bays and a 750-seat Ikea restaurant where patrons can sample their signature Swedish meatballs after a day of shopping.
Meanwhile in the Skudai area, shoppers can look forward to the opening of Paradigm Mall Johor Baru come Nov 28 by WCT Holdings Bhd.
Its retail chief executive officer Selena Chua said the mall is set to transform the southern region into a top destination for shopping, entertainment and gastronomic adventure for the over nine million population of Johor and Singapore.
The seven-storey mall houses over 500 retail shops operating on 1.3 million sq ft of retail space.
“To celebrate, we have lined up a series of exciting promotions and activities for our shoppers on opening day,” she said.
Shoppers who spend RM28 and above in two accumulated receipts from any outlet in the mall will be eligible to redeem goodie bags worth RM50, limited to the first 500.
The mall’s outlets include Parkson, one of the largest homegrown retail chains in Malaysia, Golden Screen Cinemas, Celebrity Fitness Centre, Village Grocer, Blue Ice Skating Rink and Indoor Skatepark to name a few.
“To-date, we have a take-up rate of about 90% and are confident that our wide array of offerings will offer something for everyone,” said Chua.
