Association awards cash prizes to four Sukma 2024 medallists
FOUR athletes who won medals in last year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) were rewarded in a ceremony organised by Race Walkers Association of Malaysia (RWAM).
They are Khor Jing Hong, Sriven Tan, Kok Hui Ying and P. Kaarthiyani.
Sukma is a major national biennial sporting event, designed to showcase talent and promote sports development among young athletes.
All four were singled out under the RWAM’s Sukma 2024 Achievers Incentives Award held at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.
The special ceremony was to recognise the outstanding achievements of Malaysia’s top race walkers.
RWAM president Tan Sri Eddy Chen Lok Loi handed out the Men’s category awards while Puan Sri Jessica Chen presented awards in the Women’s category.
“Our athletes have shown remarkable dedication and perseverance,” said Eddy, who is also managing director of MKH Group.
“Their success is a testament to their hard work and the support of their coaches and families.
“We are committed to continuing our efforts to develop and promote race walking in the country,” he added.
Meanwhile, Milo Malaysia sports marketing manager Lim Ker Win said the company was committed to grassroots sports development.
“We have a long-standing tradition of supporting sports at grassroot level.
“We believe in nurturing young talent and providing them with opportunities to excel.
“Our initiatives such as the Junior Development Programme and various walking clinics are designed to inspire and develop the next generation of champions,” said Lim.
Khor, who spoke on behalf of the recipients, said they were honoured by the recognition.
“Winning at Sukma 2024 was a dream come true.
“It took a lot of hard work and dedication but the support from our coaches and RWAM made it possible.
“We hope to inspire other young athletes to pursue their dreams in race walking,” he said.
Khor, who won bronze in the Men’s 10km and gold in Men’s 20km with a new Sukma record (01:34:38.20), received a cash incentive of RM3,500.
Sriven, who took gold in Men’s 10km and silver in Men’s 20km, received RM1,800.
Kok received RM1,400 for her Women’s 10km and 20km gold.
Kaarthiyani was rewarded with RM600 for silver in Women’s 10km.
Eddy also thanked dedicated coaches V. Subramaniam, Teoh Boon Lim, Lo Choon Sieng and Tan Chee Leong for their commitment to the athletes’ success.
He also announced upcoming RWAM events supported by Milo Malaysia, which would include Junior Development Programme, Penang Walking Clinic and Penang Junior Walking Championship, Melaka Walking Clinic and Melaka Junior Walking Championship.
“These events are crucial for nurturing young talents and promoting the sport of race walking across Malaysia.
“RWAM aims to expand our development programmes and increase participation in race walking events nationwide,” he added.
