Facility to open for public use, rental after event concludes
THE newly upgraded Stadium MBPJ will be open for public use and event rental after the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 concludes.
Then Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the stadium would serve as the venue for men’s football after undergoing extensive upgrades totalling some RM14.2mil.
“The upgrades were carried out using taxpayers’ money.
“So we will return it to the community by opening it up for football players, schools and others,” Mohamad Zahri said during a launch ceremony following the completion of upgrading works.
The multi-purpose sports facility in SS7, Kelana Jaya, Selangor, presently serves as the interim home for Selangor Football Club – fondly known as Red Giants – while the team’s original home, Stadium Shah Alam, undergoes redevelopment as part of the Shah Alam Sports Complex project.
Besides Stadium MBPJ, the other four MBPJ sports facilities selected as official venues for Sukma are – Stadium Hoki MBPJ (women’s hockey), Kompleks Sukan Astaka MBPJ (squash), Kompleks Sukan Kelana Jaya (tennis) and Kompleks Sukan Arena MBPJ (BMX cycling).
Mohamad Zahri said Stadium MBPJ’s project upgrades comprised the running track (RM3.26mil), electricity supply system and on-site detention (OSD) infrastructure (RM5.05mil), visiting fans’ roof and pedestrian walkway (RM1.03mil), beautification works and decorative lighting installation (RM2.08mil), landscaping (RM2.11mil) as well as a new LED panel system (RM664,000).
“The work carried out focuses on improving the stadium’s key facilities and supporting infrastructure to improve safety, comfort and operational efficiency.
“The OSD was built to accommodate rainwater runoff in this area.
“It is a system that temporarily holds water when it rains and channels water out into the drainage network later.”
He said the 10,000-capacity stadium was ready to host various sports tournaments in the future.
“The upgrades took over a year to complete due to scheduling conflicts with football matches held at the stadium.
“Construction work had to be temporarily halted a few days prior to prevent disruptions to matches.”
The 22nd Sukma will take place in Selangor from Aug 15 to 24, followed by Para Sukma from Sept 5 to 10.
Also present were deputy mayor Sharinaz Samsudin, MBPJ Sukma coordinator Aznan Hassan, deputy secretary (management) Mohd Fauzi Maarop, councillors Mohamed Hamka Mohamed Jumah and Ong Yew Thai, Engineering Department director Ahmad Roslan Hairudin and MBPJ’s senior management team.
The visit to Stadium MBPJ was held on Mohamad Zahri’s last day as Petaling Jaya mayor.
His replacement, Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi, was sworn in yesterday.
