Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) is regarded as one of the leading exponents of the art movement referred to as the Vienna Secession.

Closely related to Art Nouveau, this movement was founded in Vienna in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, designers and sculptors, including Klimt, as a reaction against traditional art forms.
