One of the centrepieces in the exhibition, the SLGB003 “Ice Forest”.
Grand Seiko, in collaboration with Sincere Fine Watches, unveiled the “Alive
In Time” exhibition to an audience of watch enthusiasts and media members at EQ Kuala Lumpur.
The special showcase celebrates the artistry of Japanese watchmaking in harmony with the spirit of the festive season, running for over seven weeks until next month.
“Alive In Time” recalls the serene beauty of Japan’s natural landscapes and celebrates the art of being present in each passing moment.
The exhibition captures the magical passage of time – changing of seasons, a reflection of nature’s rhythm and renewal.
Inspired by the frost-covered trees of the Kirigamine Highlands, east of Grand Seiko’s Shinshu Watch Studio, this vision of winter is brought to life at EQ Kuala Lumpur, where a magnificent 9.14m Christmas Tree illuminates the hotel lobby in harmony with the spirit of the season.
At the heart of the exhibition lies a celebration of Grand Seiko’s philosophy of the Nature of Time, expressed through dials that mirror the beauty of nature in its many forms – from tranquil lakes and silent forests to drifting snow and blooming flowers.
Among the latest creations showcased is the SLGB003 “Ice Forest,” featuring a pale, vertically textured dial inspired by the frozen birch forests that surround the Shinshu Watch Studio in winter.
Crafted in the Evolution 9 Collection’s signature design, the timepiece features a sculpted case and an integrated, high-comfort bracelet that combines mirror and hairline finishes for refined ergonomics and dynamic light play.
At its core beats the new Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2, carrying the U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) designation and achieving an extraordinary annual precision of ±20 seconds, marking a new milestone in Grand Seiko’s relentless pursuit of perfect timekeeping.
Another special creation within the Evolution 9 Collection is the SLGB005 “Violet Dawn”, which features a textured violet dial enhanced by masterful finishing techniques.
The intricate surface captures the fleeting moment when dawn breaks over the frost-covered forests of Shinshu, where every Grand Seiko Spring Drive is meticulously crafted.
Its silver-toned seconds hand glides in a seamless, continuous motion – a poetic expression of the natural flow of time itself.
Alongside the Evolution 9 Collection, the exhibition also presents a curated selection of historical Grand Seiko timepieces, offering a captivating journey through the brand’s legacy of watchmaking excellence since its founding in 1960.
Earlier this month, visitors also had the rare opportunity to witness a live demonstration of the Calibre 9SA4 assembly by Grand Seiko Master Watchmaker Kato Tomoya.
The highly anticipated 9SA4, a thoroughly redesigned and reconstructed movement based on Calibre 9SA5, pushes the limits of precision in mechanical watchmaking, setting a new benchmark for high-beat performance.
At the launch of the exhibition, Grand Seiko Asia-Pacific managing director Ida Idris-Low shares: “Alive In Time is about appreciating the beauty of the present moment – a celebration of how time flows seamlessly through the changing seasons.
“It reflects what defines Grand Seiko: the harmony between nature, craftsmanship and time itself.
“Inspired by the ever-changing landscapes and seasons of Japan, every Grand Seiko creation captures a living connection between precision and emotion.”
She adds: “With the introduction of the Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2 and its U.F.A. designation, we reaffirm our pursuit of precision and beauty – guided by the Nature of Time and the Japanese sense of ‘mono no aware’, where true beauty lies in the transience of every moment.”
Sincere Watch Limited CEO Ong Ban says: “Partnering with Grand Seiko gives us the opportunity to offer a closer look into the exceptional world of Japanese watchmaking.
He says Grand Seiko’s artisans and watchmakers unite technical mastery with a profound appreciation for pure, refined beauty – evident in every meticulously crafted timepiece.
